review 1: gr 3-5 (younger for read-aloud)The cover is very appealing - a rabbit on a bicycle, neck and neck with a soft-haired dragon. I found it was difficult to keep my attention focused on this book - I kept on having to re-read parts. While the story is very child-appealing, (a boy becomes best friends with a dragon), it feels like it has the tone of an adult writing what they think would be a child's fantasy. It is narrated by a character who writes a kind of a prologue. This narrator refers to Kenny in the story as a "little buck" which takes me out of the story and sounds like this story is not a kid's story but an adult's story about a kid. The story seems pretty idealized at the beginning with Kenny's life at the beginning - again, almost what an adult might think a ch... moreild's fantasy is. However, the illustrations are fabulous, and the book does build to some authentic-feeling conflict towards the end. I think kids would enjoy this wish-fulfillment story, though I'm not sure I would booktalk it because I didn't love it as much as i loved the illustrations.
review 2: This story is definitely one worth reading. It all starts off with a rabbit named Kenny who lives in a small, quiet town called Roundbrook. He has always been full of curiosity and always very interested with nature and science. This passion drives him to go on an expedition after finding out about a Dragon in his town. As he and the dragon start to form a bond, the rest of the story plays out nicely. This book was really fun to read because it was a lot happier and lighter than what I am used to reading, so it was a good break from my typical reading preferences. Another thing that I liked was the artistic style that the author uses. It is very playful and quaint. The only reason why I did not like the book is that I wanted it to be longer. It was such a great story line that I just wish that there was more of it, but other than that, it was a very pleasant book. less

A cute book for young readers and a nice gateway for them to later explore some J.R.R. Tolkien.
