review 1: I enjoyed the book and, surprisingly, came away with a different, and mixed, opinion of Casanova who could have been the template for the Dos Equis man (not that I drink, mind you, but it was the easiest cultural reference). Casanova was a mathematician, a violinist, a physician, a leader of a theater company, a monk (!) at one time, and a composer with Mozart. He escaped the Inquisition--nobody escaped the Inquisition--- and was a librarian at the end of his life. He hobnobbed with small celebs like Ben Franklin, Goethe, and Catherine the Great. He had a philosophical spat with Voltaire. Casanova was a controversial man who, in his last days, had only his beloved fox terriers for companions.
review 2: I have very bad memories of learning history at school. It
... morewas all one mindblowingly boring battle after another and I was always nodding off. If only we'd had this juicy little book on the curriculum to pique our interest in historical facts! Most of the facts are crude, rude and just plain gross which is fabulous as far as I am concerned. But there are also lot of other interesting tidbits like did you know that most of the Renaissance painters earned practically nothing because their patrons never paid up! Only Michaelangelo earned a bit and that's because he went around in the same threadbare clothes every day. I had always thought the Renaissance was the heyday for artists but alas it was always difficult to get patrons to pay invoices. A terrific read, written in a very entertaining way. less

Short chapters, interesting sidebars and a tongue in cheek style I really, really liked,

Hilarious and pithy. The perfect book when laying in bed with a cold.

It contained a lot of stories I didn't know, even as a history major.
