review 1: This story lacked depth. The entire novel was building up to a climax with the love story and robberies on the island only to fizzle out at the peak. We are forced to read through descriptions and back stories of characters that play no part in the developing story. (Why spend SO much time hinting at the mysterious tragedy in Texas for it to not really matter to Wes in the end?) The authors really pushed to make sure you didn't forget it was a "Christian" novel, to the point of redundancy and unbelievability (with every problem the characters would pray and suddenly/instantly their problems were solved.) It was not believable.
review 2: For the conservative christian audience who enjoys seeing how God works in the lives of the to protagonists, this book is a tr... moreeasure. It kept me interested with it's family disagreements about future plans and stolen jewels sub-plots, but the general arc of the story is a bit predictable. That being said my heart went out to Callie as she held the responsibility of the three children and tried to keep them out of danger. I won't spoil the story, but there was definitely a moment when I didn't know how I would have handled the situation, and I was quite afraid for Callie's safety and reputation. The prose were beautifully historically accurate to the novice historian and really drew me into the period. I felt that steamer boats and long dresses were just a normal part of my everyday life when the story enveloped me. To summarize, this book is a great Sunday afternoon pleasure read to be enjoyed in a backyard hammock or a porch swing with a glass of lemonade. less
