review 1: The Sinclairs and Campbells have been at odds since the day that Fiona's mother was brutally murdered by the Campbell's clan chief. Her anger and hate for every Campbell is as fierce as that of her siblings. And only compared to her love and need to protect her clan from their enemies. Above all, her need to protect her baby sister. At a time of peace when both clans were friends, she had been betrothed to Miles Campbell, the rival clan's eldest son. And now, King James of Scotland has decided to enforce their marriage in an attempt to bring a truce to the feud. That is the last thing she wants. For to lay with a Campbell will surely be her end. But if she refuses, her sister will be forced to take her place in this farce and Fiona will not have that. Miles was in love wit... moreh a French mademoiselle. Still as a loyal subject of the King he agrees to marry his enemy. And she is beautiful. A sight to be seen. She is also spiteful and would rather die than kiss him. Nevertheless, he carries on with his obligations and consummates their marriage as she submits to his caresses in their sleeping chamber. That is, until the fog of passion leaves her and she turns on him again. At odds with each other, Fiona and Miles fight with all their might and love with equal passion as secrets long kept come to light. Royal intrigue, passionate encounters, sibling rivalry and a love bound to happen take readers through a journey of discovery through King James Stuart's Scotland.
review 2: I discovered Tracy Brogan through an Amazon kindle deal and began with her contemporary, and so funny-Bell Harbor series. Highland Surrender was a bit difficult for me in the beginning because it was so intense with the hatred between the feuding Campbells and the Sinclairs. As Fiona is forced to wed Myles, Campbell by order of the king, her animosity is so strong she cannot see he is a decent person. Her stubbornness despite his charm took a while to get past. Their marriage, love story and secrets from a shared history involving their parents made me want to read more about the Scottish clans if written by this author. Fiona struggles with loyalty to clan, husband and recognizing truths about the present and past. Myles has got to be the most patient husband ever as he continues to woo Fiona while married. Some characters have a sense of humor although this has none of the laugh out loud scenes from the Bell Harbor books. Fiona doesn't surrender, she is a strong female character who turns out to be loveable once her prejudices are gone. This is an enjoyable Scottish romance with love and lust in the highlands. less
