review 1: This was a book I had passed over when it first came out. I thought it was just going to be your typical orphaned-kid-must-now-face-the-world-on-their-own story but, after actually reading it, ended up appreciating it so much more. The Secret Hum of a Daisy is a book full of surprises. Even when certain things were expected to happen, specific lessons to be be learned, I enjoyed the ride getting there. Loss- and how to rebuild a life after- was tackled very realistically and beautifully.I also loved the way the different relationships and dynamics were written. I was reminded me how lucky I am for the grandmothers I have!

... moreave always traveled a lot, never really settling down. When her mother has an accident, Grace must live with the Grandma she's never known. When a treasure hunt starts - just like the one her mama used to plan when they'd move to a new place - Grace is sure mama is doing it from heaven. Like I said, heartwarming yet bittersweet. Holczer has a love of animals and the outdoors that really enhanced my enjoyment of the book."There was a sudden rush of sadness that got so big, I was sure it would munch me up in three small bites.""Tiny drops of fine mist covered Grandma's bun-tight head, caught there the way mist will catch in a spider's web.""A jogger went by, running for her life, it seemed, and wearing a fluorescent pink shirt most likely visible from heaven.""I poked and she poked and I thought about love and how it makes you feel clicked open, like a key turned in a lock.""I think there's a moment in a long stream of moments when you first know someone, and you are finding your way around their quirks, kinks, and general person-ness, that they go from being a new person to a friend.""Maybe everything in this life worked or didn't work according to where you were standing at any given moment." less
