review 1: Research shows that our EQ (Emotional intelligence), or the ability to manage our emotions and relationships around us is a better determinant of success than IQ. While IQ is fixed and can’t be improved, EQ can. EQ encompasses our own self awareness, self management, relationship management and social awareness skills. Ironically, the higher up the corporate ladder, the poorer the EQ skills (generally). Contains important information for playing the corporate game, but the advice for improving your own EQ seemed a little light weight and generic at times.
review 2: Here's a genre with which I struggle a bit. I'm a firm believer that nonfiction can approach the same literary merit as fiction, and both can succumb to the same pitfalls. I enjoy some of the info... morermation in many of these management/creativity titles, but frequently encounter writing styles that provide too much of a hurdle for me. I recognize that books like Emotional Intelligence 2.0 aren't intended to be enjoyed for their literary value, but my own brain is so wired in that direction that it can be distracting. Having said that, there is some interesting info here regarding self-understanding and relating to others, specifically in the workplace. None of it is groundbreaking, but it's enough to spur some reflection. I haven't taken the online quiz that reportedly allows you to contextualize or personalize much of the book's advice. As with many other contemporary workplace titles, there is enough white margin space here for notes, shopping lists, doodles or perhaps writing your own book. It's very digestible in one reading (even for me), and could definitely resonate for longer. less
