review 1: A friend gave it to my father last February… but he didn’t like it. In fact he discouraged me when I started fiddling with it… somehow I liked it. Liked it very much. Basically a romantic novel. “Sophy”, a jobless, homeless single mother of 38 years, certainly inherits a manor. The manor, “Wynter’s End” is actually a white elephant…in almost dilapidated condition. She also inherits a huge bank loan… She is supposed to sale it to her handsome cousin “Jack” but before taking the final decision she decides to pay a visit to Wynter’s End where she spent 8 best years to her childhood. She received mixed response from the present inhabitants which includes two of her great grand-aunts and few servants and gardeners. But slowly everyone accepts her and s... morehe feels the strange existence of one of her ancestors,”Alys Blezzard the witch”. Allys becomes her guiding angel. Sophy falls in love with the manor itself… she decides to stay there and tries to restore the manor and draws a plan of earning money by restoring the palace and opening it to the public. It certainly annoys “Jack”… who fails to convince her to sale the property. Finally he proposes her to marry him, but somehow Sophy is suspicious about his intentions… she shares a strong love-hate relation with her head gardener Seth… who is head over heels with the most beautiful woman of the locality………. In one word it’s a chick flick book. Simple lucid English. Simple storyline…. If you are in mood of reading something light give it a try
review 2: I was looking for something light and easy to pick up and put down while looking after my newborn daughter, and this fit the bill! I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the house, and wanted to go help pitch in to clean it up. The romantic entanglements felt a bit tacked-on, and were probably the least interesting part for me. But overall it was a fun, easy read - I will pass it on to a friend. less
