review 1: I did enjoy this book, it was nice to have a mass of different stories to read within one book, by several different authors. The stories were great and varied and surprisingly I found myself wanting to read it a second time, which doesn't usually happen to book with several different stories by varied authors. If you get a chance to check this out, I would suggest that you do - I do enjoy a good vampire romance!!
review 2: There were two stories in this that were very good. First of these is 'Perdition'. That was truly romantic in the adult sense, and non-soppy. The writing was stellar, a true winner. The other was 'I Need More You'. Very good, in a completely different style, and very thought provoking. The rest were an odd assortment of styles, mostly Mills
... moreand Boon style juvenile fantasy clothed with vampires and the general supernatural. The other one about Doc Holliday was good as well, but I can't remember the name at the moment, it was near the back of the book somewhere. I didn't like the writing as much as the other two, though that's a purely personal preference.I must say, the first writer was hopeless...there was one page where she told us the protagonist's name NINE TIMES. I counted, and that wasn't the only page full of it. There was no other person in the scene! I have an attention span! I already know what the girls name is! For chrissakes enough! It was like she'd been to a creative writing course and they'd said, 'use the name a little more so the reader engages with the character', and she ran with the ball, god bless her. Some of these other stories showed immense promise but really fell short in the ultimate by introducing that 'adolescent fantasy' thing. I was well and truly over that type of sexual fantasy by the age of 14. Do adults read this stuff? It was like being thrown into a vat full of the Twilight books. Gag Puke Gag. I love my vampires, but cannot stand the kiddy version. The Harry Potter series was more grown up, and enjoyable. I really started to like some of the stories, especially the cat detective one, and then you'd get this cheeseball line like ''his smouldering eyes held hers...'', and ''his curly black hair...''. That to me is not romance, that is just formula tripe for the almost illiterate. Sorry, but that's how I feel. I like my escapist fantasy a little bit more gritty and cerebral.I know why the two great stories were spaced as they were....to keep you hanging on in case there was another good one. I nearly didn't get as far as 'I Need More You'. My husband saw my face as I was reading and said, 'Wow that must be a bad book, you'll read anything'. That just about says it all.I sorrow for the stories that might have been..... there were some that could be worked up into greatness.I've just read some of the reviews below, and it seems I'm in direct oppsition to most reviewers. I don't know why anyone would not understand Flotsam, and I didn't find it depressing. Life is not simple and things don't always end well, or as expected, even in fantasy land. I would say it was one of the better ones. A lot of reviewers scored Perdition quite low, and I thought it was outstanding. Some people struggled with I Need More You, as well. I look for stories where reading between the lines is just as important as reading the words. It seems most fans of this type of fiction don't go for layers in their literature. I won't be picking up any more of this type of collection. less
