review 1: I am ashamed to admit that I have been on goodreads for years and Trisha Wolfe was one of my first friends when I joined. I have had her books on my tbr list but haven’t read one yet. I am kicking myself for not having read one before now. She is an awesome writer.I find myself attracted to books that have broken characters. There is so much to work on and so much depth in those books. This book is about Sam and Holden. Both are extremely broken in different ways. Sam has just lost her fiancé to an accident. She isn’t coping well and is seeing her dead boyfriend all the time; she doesn’t take care of herself and refuses to drive. She is forced to take medications. She doesn’t take them, just flushes them down the toilet. She has driven away all her friends. Her par... moreents are coping in different ways as well with her psychosis. Then she gets hold of Tyler’s diary and decides to read it looking for clues about the hit and run driver who killed him. She also decides that she wants to make the road trip that she and Tyler had planned to take after they were married and let some of his ashes go at each of the stops. She just has one problem, her would be father in law knows about her craziness and refuses to help her. This is where Holden steps in. He has been to Hell and back. Well, no, he isn’t back yet. He has loved Sam from afar since they were kids and almost acted on it once. But Holden yields to his brother, Tyler, who has also claimed Sam. So Holden acts like a jerk to send her away from him. Sam has always had feelings for Holden but just tried to move on after he broke her heart. Holden was also ostracized by his dad after admitting that he drove the car that killed his mother. Holden has the same love of art that Sam has. Holden has other secrets in his closet but I can’t share those with you.Holden is back in town and checks in on Sam to see only how messed up she is. He witnesses her talking to no one in the woods and talks to her. He also witnesses that she had gone to his home to get the ashes.Holden decides to help her and gets some of the ashes for her. But his condition to it is that he goes with her on the road trip. She tries to ditch him but is unsuccessful. Then between Holden, Sam and Tyler’s diary and time spent on the road, Secrets are learned and shared. The healing process really begins for both of these broken people and they learn the truth about each other and Tyler. The writing flows well. It goes back and forth between Holden and Sam’s POV. I love to watch the light bulb go on with these two. I loved watching them realize that they were really meant for each other all along. But it doesn’t come easy. Sam has some major problems to work through and Holden has his share of heartache too.I found myself in tears over them at times. If I cry, it is an automatic 5 stars for me. The things that they both have suffered from are insurmountable and heartbreaking. But together they start to heal. I want me some Holden! That guy is really selfless although he thinks he is selfish! You just really need to read this. I love the title of the book and it’s meaning in the story. I wish I could learn how to put words on images because I would have put the quotes on the picture. Now, every time I see a dead tree, I will think of this book. There is another book coming in this series and I am curious where it is going to go next. If you love traveling, meeting random biker chick strangers who might become a friend, walking, finding yourself, healing, redemption, forgiveness, broken characters, and mental illness you will enjoy it. If you despise abuse, deception, and hurting the ones you love you will read about it.I really can’t do this book justice!
review 2: This was not your run of the mill romance novel, and this might be why I loved it. Sam and Holden are going on a road trip to disperse Tyler's (Sam's fiancee and Holden's brother) ashes along the route he'd devised for the honeymoon. There is lots of history and secrets between the three of them as they grew up together. The trip turns out to be a really healing time for Sam and Holden. They get to say goodbye to Tyler and make peace with things in the past. Beautiful book to read. less
