review 1: The title caught my eye at the library, as did the cover picture.I really wanted this book to rise higher, but for me, it didn't quite. What I mean is that I wanted Kanter to dig deeper and thus make her book a more solid glimpse of life in Vienna and Paris and London during the war and the death march of Nazis, as well as her life, her parents, her marriage to Walter Erlich, her millinery design and creativity - her guts, I guess.Maybe it was my gray mood, but this memoir seems too-Trudi and not enough anyone else. Seems pouty and superficial.Probably my reaction is best captured near the end of the book when Trudi waits for her father and husband to be released from internment camp in England, a place of months-long agony for them."Roofs and chimneys are silhouetted agai... morenst the red sky. Mr. Curlow (eventually her husband's rescuer) vanishes into the night. There is a sudden feeling of absence since he has gone. I want to cry. Is this my fault? Even in my smart clothes, with my sophisticated maquillage, my two marriages, and all my recent experiences, I am still an immature girl."Maybe that's it for me. Girls and hats and Hitler and a true love story. Oh my. That's quite a recipe, but perhaps it lacks ingredients.
review 2: Very good book, and very interesting to read. I'm not sure if this book was written as is by Ms. Kantor, or if it's been translated and/or edited by a professional author, but either way, the writing is very good and the story moves very well. It's said at the beginning that WWII/Holocaust stories from "common men" weren't very popular until the 80s, and I can kind of understand that. This book really isn't as interesting as many of those that came before it. Her circumstances weren't nearly as dire as many people's were, though she was very, very lucky on a few different occasions. I can only assume that she was very charming and new how to talk people into helping her. The book is really a WWII story told from a fashionable young lady, and that is the major appeal. It also has a love story involved. It's really a good story for young women of today to learn about WWII and how it affected people. less
