review 1: i'm actually surprised i managed to finish this. i originally picked it up because i wanted to read more books where the narrator/main character begins the story with amnesia. the premise is largely misogynistic, the narrator - emma 2.0 - doesn't use contractions of any kind, spends most of the novel using stiff language except in two instances where she used colloquialisms, which was jarring. i can see that the book was designed to have a sequel, but i have no interest in it, especially if the epilogue is a clue that declan will be the new narrator. the story's focus was mostly on emma's interpersonal relationships, and less on the potential of the dystopic world the author set, which would have been more interesting.
review 2: Well, I only finished because I
... morefelt like I had to. The premise was great, but once I read the word "clones" I wanted to set myself on fire. I much preferred a story like "Before I Go to Sleep" by S.J. Watson, but that wasn't what I got here. There was so much that I couldn't understand - first of all, what caused the split between east and west? What exactly is the resistance fighting? How come Emma blindly followed every man that told her to? Maybe more is explained in the second book, but I don't care enough to read it. less

Clever plot, fun read, good twist towards the end. This would make a good movie.
