review 1: My first delve into the world of Ursula Dubosarsky, and I can say I was enthralled from beginning to end. My first delight was in the depth and beauty of the language. It evoked a real sense of drama, created a visual sense of place, yet left me intrigued and haunted by the possibilities. That which was left unsaid, was equally important as that which was explicitly painted for us. The connections to history and the use of Blackman's paintings as a tie to reality made it all the more interesting. I loved this book.
review 2: A strange little book. Somehow it reminded me of Picnic at Hanging Rock, but that was a much more enjoyable and believable story. Another oddity: the chapter titles are taken from paintings by artist Charles Blackman; if you Google for im
... moreages of his paintings, they will add to the discomfort of reading this book. I'm still undecided if it would have added to the story, to see and read more about this reference to the artist. less

Dream-like and very well written. A bit slow at times but is a quick read.
