review 1: This was a good space adventure, about the discovery of an element that makes almost the speed of light travel possible. Of course that's only because it had already been done by an ancient race and the way stations erected on the edges of the solar systems. It mostly follows the captain of a mission to Pluto (which is still called a planet in this book, not sure if it was written before it was deemed a non planet or if that's a reflection of the author's thought about that retraction)who happens to be in the right place at the right time when the first, although accidental, light speed travel happens to a 10 year old boy. I liked the way countries had almost become companies and how space travel was privatized. It was a good read.
review 2: I'm probably be
... moreing unfair, but as an astronomer, the science of the book really fell through for me. Of course, science fiction is supposed to build off of the fiction part of its title, but there were too many inconsistencies and small "science facts" spouted of by characters that were foolish. If you're big into science, I wouldn't recommend it, but if you just like the idea of space travel (which yes, is unrealistic, but at least has no known foundation which is being ignored through the course of the book) then this book is a fun read. less

I kept choking on "jargon" and acronyms, I gave up, utterly bored, at 10%
