review 1: Who could not fail to finish a story which begins with a Gypsy fortune teller? This clever start led me into a world rich in traditions (esp. of holidays and foods), superstitions, and rituals of the Ukrainian culture. The reader does get an idea of Eastern Europe during WWII, of the horrors of war the main experienced as well as time in a displaced person's camp at the war's end. The novel is very romantic, bordering on "chick-lit", but it was a very satisfying tale overall.

not sure why so many people love this book. I found it tedious at times and ultimately forgettable.
