review 1: Overall I enjoyed the story. I have read several of Kelly's books now and I can't help but feel she's fallen into the same rut as Christine Feehan. You know the one. Where the main characters across her series become remarkably alike. To the point that you forget which character's life and romance you're even reading. All of the men seem to be members (or collude in some way) with the Intelligence Service. The men, more often than not, are always bastards of high-born (sometimes royal) fathers. All of them have abandonment issues and carry on locking their emotions away...allegedly. All of the women are well-born damsels in distress. The author would have you believe that all of these women are intelligent and had no interest in any man until this man comes along.... more Then it is immediate "heat in the lower part of her belly" lusts that she's never felt before...conveniently. Frankly I expect better writing. Too many in the romance genre seem to lose their touch. The leads blend together with other leads, the stories go by in a blur of inconsequential details until the leads finally give into their passions and the books come to a very predictable end. Yes, she can put together a story. It is loosing your creativity over the long term that seems to be a stumbling block for many authors. You don't want the characters and stories to become predictable and boring. Create characters with different personalities, motivations and goals.
review 2: Wonderful tale, with the mystery of an abandoned baby with a crested signet ring, a convenient marriage, a notorious hero, and intrepid heroine, whose father was a spy, and has a godfather who is a spymaster. The second book of the Renegade Royals turned out to be more light-hearted and warmer than expected, considering the hero, Griffin Steele, had a very tough life, owned gambling houses and brothels, and was rumored to be a crime lord. The author created a wonderful cast of characters! The paperback is a 5-star value really, which includes the bonus novella, "Lost in a Royal Kiss". The novella is a prequel with a young Dominic Hunter and Chloe Steele (Griffin's mother), and featured the romance of Dominic's mentor, Sir Anthony Tait, and his future wife, Linnet St. Clare. less
