review 1: All I can say is "Wow!" Not only did Louis le Grand figure out how to hold his own among the likes of Richelieu, Mazarin, and Colbert, but so did a unpretentious little lady. This book is very much a dual bio of the wife and her late-in-life husband. All the supporting characters are so well drawn too, and the scenery is you-are-there from La Rochelle to Martinique to Marais to Versailles. The 17th century just comes totally alive from the first to last page of this book. On a scale of 1-5 stars I have to give this 10!
review 2: The story of Francoise and the circumstances which educated and created a young woman who would become the king's mistress. The writing is engaging and interesting, but for myself a bit too in depth, exploring Francoise's parent's
... morebackground and the families in detail. I began to lose interests, but still feel that if you are interested in French history and royalty this book would be a good read. less

An excellent eye-opening biography, but full of errors. Can't be trusted. Too bad.
