On This Day – September 8th

1962: The Patriots lost to the Dallas Texans in a shootout 42-28 at the Cotton Bowl. Babe Parilli had a rushing touchdown and threw one to Tony Romeo, while Larry Garron and Ron Burton each ran for a TD.

1963: The Patriots beat the Jets 38-14 in their first game since changing their name from the Titans. Nick Buoniconti had a the first of a few 2nd half interceptions that shut down the Jets for a Patriots win and DB Dick Felt pulled down another. This was the first game at Alumni Stadium for the Patriots.

 

1968: The Patriots beat the Bills 16-7 at War Memorial Stadium. Gino Cappelletti’s three field goals were the difference in this win. Houston Antwine’s sack pushed the Bills out of field goal range. His performance earned him Defensive Player of the Week.

1974: The Patriots beat the Eagles 27-17 in the preseason finale. Jim Plunkett engineered five scoring drives and helped the Patriots build a 20-0 lead by the middle of the third quarter.

1985: The Patriots beat the Packers 26-20 in the season opener. In a span of five plays, the Patriots fumbled, threw an interception, and were stopped in the endzone for a safety. New England took a first quarter lead with an 11 yard Tony Collins TD run and never looked back.

1991: The Patriots were shutout by the Browns 20-0. During the game, the Patriots went 29 straight plays without a first down. The game was Bill Belichick’s first win as an NFL head coach.

1996: The Patriots lost to the Bills 17-10. Terry Glenn caught the only TD of the game in his first NFL game and rookie Adam Vinatieri missed three field goal attempts.

2005: The Patriots raised banner 3 in a 30-20 win over the Raiders.

2013: The Patriots eked out a win over the Bills 23-21. Ball security was an issue as Tom Brady fumbled and Stevan Ridley fumbled twice. Stephen Gostkowski kicked the game winning field goal with nine seconds left.
