review 1: This was so poorly written I felt like I was wading through pure word mud. While the stories were certainly adorable, I think that this could easily have been a much smaller book and a better read because of it. Poor Myron had such a lovely experience and I'm happy that she's spreading all the positivity of it, but why in the most brutally boring and repetitious way imaginable?I wish I had taken a friend's advice and read the chapter book she wrote for older children instead of this one, and maybe I will someday, but I need distance first!
review 2: I wanted to like this book but I found it hard to find any patience with the story. It has a clogging sentimentality, a very saccharine tone and it tries very hard to paint a picture of small town life, people the
... morere are so humble and hard working! Whatever, book, people are humble and hard-working anywhere. In general, I thought it was way too much about the people aspect than the cat, it's a "dear old town" in a "Murder, She Wrote" style described in so many ways. Yawn. The only part I kind of liked was towards the end, when Dewey was getting unwell, it talked about the difficulty of losing a beloved animal, I can relate to that, having lost several beloved pets and I fear for the end of my 12 year old cat. There is a lot of grief and pain that is rarely touch upon, and considering that pets have a much shorter lifespan's than we, it's an important subject. less

To be fair, this style of book isn't my usual genre. But sometimes I like to take a step away from spy thrillers and suspense novels for something totally different. And often that is a humorous narrative about creatures/pets.For 277 pages, I expected more narrative and plot development. Instead, this book is one-third history of Spencer (IA) and surrounds; one-third stuff about people and their personal lives; and one-third short tales about Dewey. Even the tales became so redundant that I had to force myself to finish it.All in all, the narrative style was just flat for me. It wasn't strong enough to become emotionally engaged with either a human or the cat.
