review 1: This was my first read by this author. I thought the story was decent. I got a kick out of the fact the main characters brother states that "horrors come for kids too." With such a statement I expected Lucretia to endure a much "worse" experience. But, I should also confess I may be desentized to the level of horror inflicted since I'm a long time Stephen King fan and enjoy all things gruesome whether presented by Max Brooks or in the twisted macabre outcome of a Palahniuk novel (Lullaby). I will say this much, the imagery was intensely vivid and I often imagine how I would have taken this as my younger self. Nonetheless, my exposure to LaValle has peaked my interest to read his latest, The Devil in Silver.
review 2: Lucretia and the Kroons is a sort of preque... morel to LaValle's forthcoming book, "The Devil in Silver," which is adult fiction. This novella introduces us to Lucretia, a young teen who is best friends with her upstairs neighbor, Sunny. But Sunny has cancer and is coming to the end of her life. Lucretia plans to have Sunny visit for her birthday, but on the day of the visit, Sunny appears to be gone. Lucretia spots a bizarre figure that may be one of Sunny's apartment's former residents, a family ravaged by drugs. Lucretia has entered an afterlife shadowland--a nightmarish world where familiar places are now haunted by flying rats and savage mutant creatures. She is desperate to save Sunny, but when she finds her, Lucretia realizes that she must now let her go. This literary horror fantasy is visceral and powerful. I look forward to reading The Devil in Silver. less
