review 1: A young man of Greek descent in 2007 hears the story of his grandparents Dimitri and Katerina Komninos on the island of Thessaloniki. It is a story of war in the Balkans, Greek nationalism, anti-semitism, cultural tolerance as well as an observation of capitalism vs communist ideologies. The story spans 90 years and it's historical elements are by necessity compressed. A good story / plot, although the deaths of a number of male characters (including Karerina's first husband) are a little too predictable and contrived.
review 2: I loved this book! I was afraid there's too much history for me in this book as historical fiction isn't my favorite genre, but I was drawn in the story and liked even the historical parts. I learned so much about Greece.Hislop has crea

A nice historical fiction read. Slow at times, but for the most part I really enjoyed it.
