review 1: Mitsos is going to school in Greece. His parents live abroad but his grandparents still live in the land they were born. He asks them why they don't move and live in Britain with their children. They answer by giving him a historical account of the town of Thessaloniki, Greece from 1917 to 2007. From a fire that devastates the city, to WWII, to civil war that follows. It was very well-written and I will be looking to read her other two books.
review 2: I was lent this book by a friend who had little knowledge of my reading habits, other than my assertion that I like to broaden my horizons periodically. ... more enjoy the novel – the emphasis of the plot revolves around personal relationships in between families from different cultural backgrounds in Thessaloniki during a fascinating turbulent period of the 20th century. less

Interesting but the story and characters sometimes get lost amongst the historical detail.
