review 1: I really enjoyed this book, people always seem to compare Victoria Hislops book to the Island which I think is unfair, that book was unique and one of my fav's but we should take each book on its own merit. I found this story quite comforting, (strange given that it was about war and the devastation it causes). However, the familes were so strong and the love in each of them was amazing, by contrast there were also characters who seem to be loveless. I learnt a lot about the history of Cyprus which I am ashamed to say I was a bit clueless about.
review 2: I don't like writing bad reviews because no natter how bad the book I hate criticising an authors work - but this book was so awful I must say something. I very much enjoyed 'The Island' and indeed bought sev... moreeral copies as gifts. Ive bought ' The Return' but haven't read it being advised that it wasn't as good as 'The Island'. This book was a bookclub choice and the only reason that i made it to the end was the fact that I hadn't read last months book.What an awful book. No real connection with any of the badly drawn characters - is he generous and kind or greedy and evil ? Is she beautiful and smart or really just a bad dresser and stupid beyond belief ? You decide; because all Hislop does is fire a few character traits down on the page, only change her tack two chapters later. I'm convinced she didn't know her own characters or give much thought to her floppy plot lines.I thought initially the idea of a novel centered around a real deserted city would be an interesting and exciting one - how wrong I was. I couldn't wait for it to end and cant believe it has so few poor reviews. less
