review 1: "The Soul of All Living Creatures" by Vint Virga was a truly disappointing book. There were some very interesting stories about different animals that were fairly well told, but the author took a great leap with each story to show how they illustrated how animal behaviors teach humans about how to be better humans. Each link was really weak and were suggestive of a mashup of pop psychology, mysticism, New Age philosophy, and wishful thinking. I am an animal lover, but this book was a reach even for the most diehard animal fanatics whom I know. The editing was also quite poor and led to the book being rather difficult to follow. The only reason I didn't rate it lower was that the stories about the animals were sometimes engaging. I would not recommend this ... morebook.
review 2: Interspersed with some really fascinating stories about animals is some very new agey mumbo jumbo. Which is too bad, because the second half of every chapter was essentially unreadable. Oh, there's also a weirdly high number of old folktales in this book. That illustrate something about animals and humans. Except, man, I'd rather just read about animals and humans interacting and whatnot. (Also, sometimes Virga tells a story about an animal with a weird behavioral issue AND NEVER TELLS US THE OUTCOME of that particular situation. Nothing is more infuriating.) less
