review 1: I absolutely loved this book. The topics discussed are extremely applicable in many ways. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book covered many areas of spiritual life for all believers—fathers, mothers, young men, young women, etc—not just for "what a potential suitor must be." This book definitely helped me grow in my own walk with the Lord, and focus/refine my own personal convictions and beliefs regarding dating, courtship, and marriage.I cannot recommend this book enough. I will definitely be encouraging my friends to read it as well. Voddie Baucham absolutely hits the nail on the head, and in so many more ways than one.
review 2: First off, my reviews are NOT in-depth. Rather they are quick jots of my opinion on the book.Regarding this bo
... moreok: I was rather surprised. I expected a list of what he must be. I walked away with something rather different. If you want a list see "So You Want to Marry My Daughter?". Although I do not agree with the underlying premise of that book (that it is okay to date before engagement). You'll find the way VB describes in this book the reason why our family is strongly opposed to dating.Back to this book, I found it long winded at times, it certainly could have been condensed for what it covered. For example he quotes many theologians as if to prove something (not sure what). Seemed unnecessary for this topic. There were many rabbit trails. It seemed as if VB's chapters (and themes within) did not flow well (especially the last chapter). Was outlining something left undone before writing? However I must say there was much useful information within this book and I still recommend it. My favorite part is his story against dating, I'll call it the stolen heart. Next I enjoyed the four P's (prophet, priest, protector and provider) and wish it he had hit those sooner and expanded upon them. I enjoyed that he gave some real life experiences. I also like that he calls us to raise men. Note that this book is for dads, moms, daughters AND sons! (even future sons-in-law)Ultimately I must admit that my heart was softened on some issues. I would NEVER have expected this author to soften my heart, I repeat NEVER. I enjoyed the book, filled it with highlights and will reference it often. less
