review 1: It seems reviewers either loved or hated this book, but I really liked it. I dropped a star actually, because it was too long, and I got tired of Imogen's passivity. I grant her the lack of choices in her society and era. I get it. But she lacked the courage she needed again and again, until it was almost too late to grab her happily ever after. Archer was a weak man, as well, which shows how both their lives were shaped by the wicked people and circumstances around them, but in spite of these things, I really cared that they would both take the chance to find happiness together - and they finally did. I was riveted to the story, and was thinking about it when I wasn't reading it, so that's a good sign.
review 2: This was one of those books that I came ve
... morery close to not finishing. I thought it dragged quite a bit at points during the reading. It is an era that I am glad does not exist today. All the back and forth bantering between the key characters, their distrust, the arranged marriage, etc. at times was just too much. I think the book could have been condensed. I really like historical fiction; this book lacked the history background that I was anticipating.Even though I thought about not finishing the book, I also felt some drawn to get to the end and find out what happens to Hamilton and Imogene. Not sure that I will seek out other books by this author. less
