review 1: "Tome," is the word. At slightly over 800 pages, this book is massive enough to warp gravity. Drop it, and seismographs around the globe will spike. Collects not just the original comics, but also the various crossovers with The Authority and so on that were published as one shots. The original script for issue #1 and some relevant excerpts from John Cassaday's sketchbook round out the volume. Planetary is all about tracing the secret history of the 20th century. There are nods to all sorts of comics and pop culture icons including the Justice League, Doc Savage, the Lone Ranger, Tarzan, Lovecraft, Sherlock Holmes, Godzilla, Hong Kong action movies, Marilyn Monroe ... There's an ongoing story arc involving Elijah Snow's past. What really makes this series special i... mores Warren Ellis' knack for mind-blowing concepts. His knowledge of the bleeding edge of current technology allows him to come up with wonderfully plausible explanations for the most fantastic concepts. The only other writer I've seen manage this with anything close to equal facility is SF writer Charles Stross. Planetary is one of the best titles in recent decades, and is especially well I represented in this massive volume.
review 2: Hand's down my most favorite Warren Ellis creation, and probably my most favorite comic book series in a very long while. At once an homage to all heroes and villains in the known literary universe (from classical to horror to pulp) and a fantastic comic book adventure, Ellis manages to keep my interest by accessing at my youthful dreams and satisfying my adult intellect with equal measure.
