review 1: “When novice P.I. Geri Sullivan first heard her adopted Chihuahua talk, she thought she'd gone barking mad. But it turns out Pepe is a savvy sleuth--and if he has his way, he'll soon be a bone-a-fido celebrity, too, as Pepe and Geri are Hollywood-bound to star in the reality show Dancing With Dogs. So far, so bueno. Then Nigel St. Nigel, the judge everyone loves to hate, becomes the judge someone wanted dead. Pepe and Geri are hot on a killer's heels but between perfecting the paso doble and protecting Pepe's Pomeranian lady love, both have their paws full. If Pepe's new status as a Beverly Hills Chihuahua goes to his head, it may be the last waltz for Geri's crime-biting compadre. . .”Anyone loving mysteries has to enjoy this book! Pepe, the talking Chihuahua with his... more great smeller and terrific sense of hearing is one of the best P.I.’s around and he almost NEVER shuts up driving his poor adoptee often into the most peculiar, humorous predicaments I’ve ever read. The mystery is well plotted, caries through the whole book just great and is a pure pleasure to read! A wonderful P.I. team!
review 2: "Chihuahua Confidential" is book No. 2 in the Barking Detective Series, and the story just keeps getting better and better. In this book, Geri, a former house stager turned detective-in-training and her rescue Chihuahua, Pepe, go to Los Angeles to participate in a Dancing with the Stars type competition show. People start dropping dead at an alarming rate and, of course, Geri and Pepe are in the thick of the investigation. Geri and Pepe actually converse, although to outsiders' ears, Pepe's end of the conversations just sound like yips. The backstage descriptions of "Dancing with Dogs" ring true, including the depiction of the producers' manipulation of "reality".The scene where Geri figures out Pepe really does belong to one of the show judges touched my heart - I encountered a similar real life situation with a Beagle I adopted and had to make the same decision as Geri. Pepe's descriptions of his past activities sound just like the ones my current Beagle would tell, if she could talk. The rest of the story was entertaining, and I was sad when the book ended.Sure, some of the writing is formulaic, but I didn't care. It's like visiting with an old friend and hearing stories that bear repeating. I've already pre-ordered book No. 3, "The Big Chihuahua," which comes out in October 2013. Eagerly awaiting it's arrival on my Kindle. I just learned these are also available in paperback. Kind of wish I would have known that before I started getting them in e-book.This is a lighthearted, engaging, charming story, perfect for the beach, or a relaxing day at home. And it made the time on the treadmill just fly by. less
