review 1: This book discusses and depicts the drawings and maps that Tolkien created for his book The Hobbit. They range from pencil sketches to finished paintings as used in the book. Tolkien wasn't an artist (as he himself said) and especially had trouble with the human (or hobbit) figure. What he focused on was what he as an amateur artist could do well like trees & landscapes. This would mean more to somebody who really loves The Hobbit or has read it more recently than I have. Also to those who like to see how ideas change.
review 2: I am amazed when an author has the talent to illustrate their own books. Tolkien made his words from his hobbit story come to life. It was enlightening to see how his artwork transformed as a “work in progress” into the final work
... mores of art. The format of the book was instructive showing almost step-by-step how Tolkien evolved his individual sketches. The descriptions alongside the illustrations were helpful as to explain where exactly any particular scene was depicted from the book. It was masterfully done. In some instances explanations were made as to why Tolkien made certain changes or chose to do an image a specific way in the first place. It was mentioned that one of his favorite paintings was that of Bilbo floating on the barrel to the huts of the Raft-elves. A few of my favorites were: The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the-Water, conversation with Smaug, and The Hall at Bag-End, Residence of B. Baggins Esquire.” Surprisingly I was intrigued by the explanation of his cover art. He invested a lot of his time into getting the binding and the dust jacket just right down to the colors, the border pattern, the trees, the dragon and the eagle in the sky, the central placement of the Lonely Mountain in the picture and so forth. In a letter Tolkien explained that “the presence of the sun and moon in the sky together refers to the magic attaching to the door in the Lonely Mountain…” There was even a translation of the runes bordering the cover. The entire book was an impressive piece of work. less
