review 1: This book was as hard to read as Dominion-The Power of Man, The Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy. It made me sad and then it made me mad. Mad that even though some progress has been made, we still have factory farming, bear baiting, wolf hunting, canned hunts, seal slaughter in Canada, and whale hunting in Japan and Norway to name a few atrocities. The author (president and CEO of thr HSUS) makes a call to all people to use kindness and self-restraint in the treatment of our fellow creatures. I believe after reading this book, that if a society can truly be judged by the way it's animals are treated, we are in a lot trouble if we don't change. Of course there are some heartwarming stories about the animal human bond, such as stories of Hurricane Katrina victi... morems and their reunited pets, animals who have saved humans, and humans who have stepped up to save the animals. At the end of the book, the author offers 50 ways to help animals. Maybe if each person picks even a few (I found that I practice only 10 of the suggestions) the world would be a better place for all, not just the animals!
review 2: A wonderfully, important book, that will be an eye-opener to many. And, I hope that many will read it. Our relationships with animals go far beyond the relationships we have with our pets. Even without our knowledge, we are intertwined with them on a daily basis - animals that most don't even think about. Our food system, our clothing, our daily-use products - all can either add to or alleviate the misuse of our fellow creatures, as well, of course, of our environment. Our impact on them is of great import and concern, and needs some serious altering. With awareness, from this book and from others with the love of animals and nature, there is hope for future change. This book does make a great call for action. less
