review 1: I very much enjoyed this story, which starts with an unusual premise and weaves in a lot of really interesting characters. I loved that our main character and her friends are fangirls. The aspects of Japanese culture that were included were interesting as well, though I did have to check the glossary frequently. I think I would have preferred to have the Japanese words defined in the text instead. I also could have used a list of characters somewhere, as it got hard to keep track of everybody when so many of them were referred to by different names at different times and the names of the Shinto gods were so different from what I'm used to. Also, no spoilers, but I loved the very last line.
review 2: I loved this book! It had elements of everything-humor, horro
... morer, supernatural, romance. I also learned a ton of things about Japan and the Japanese that I had no idea, seeing as it isn't a topic I readily read or desire to learn about. I loved the main charater, Nikki. I loved how flawed she was, yet, she found ways to cope with her issues and her hypergraphia became a strength and the way she was able to "save the day." I loved her friends, who were hilarious and stuck by Nikki in thick and thin and her romantic interest, Leo (honestly-hot!). The kami, Atsumoro was a fantastic guide, and I enjoyed hearing his back story. Each charater had so many layers, they seemed like real people to me. Every person had a reason to be there-there were no extra charaters and it ended up wrapped in a perfect bow, which is honestly how I like most endings. There was some swearing, nothing I found jarring, and some violence, and again, nothing I found excessive or not fitting with the tone of the story. There also was mention of rapes, however nothing was detailed, only mentioned as a possible reason for certain behaviors. There was also a very mild sex scene, that I loved and felt very appropriate to the story line. I might have found a new favorite author! less

Wonderful book. I lost myself in it. (If only I could lose the cover. It is particularly atrocious).

Amazing story, one of the most original I've read in years. Completely recommend this one.
