review 1: "A dream, not dreamed at night because I do not dream, but experienced while walking: when I saw snow falling over the jungle and forming a soggy blanket over the huge, warm river, over the palm huts, the vultures' branches, I knew at once that an ice age had broken our in Europe, covering everything calamitously, and this could only be a long-distance effect from that. A large boa constrictor was also there, killed by a volley of buckshot to the head, but brought back to life by energetic massage.""El Tigre, the toughest and most daring of our woodsmen, who always hides his shoulder-length black hair under his blue hard had -- I have never seen him in a shirt, but never without his hard hat and machete, both of which he probably takes to bed with him -- showed me his ring... more finger, which had been crushed when he was felling a tree and almost torn off. Our cook, the medic's assistant, had set the splintered bones in the shape of a finger, stitched the tends together, and saved the digit. It looks impressive, although, as El Tigre told us, he can no longer put a ring on it." A masterwork of tragicomedy. One of the most hilarious books I've read this year. Not just for film enthusiasts who love Herzog and/or Fitzcarraldo, or for filmmakers who could no doubt RELATE -- Herzog's diary entries lay bare the almost unbelievable trials and joys of filming in the Amazon, dealing with border war, catastrophic flooding, and Klaus Kinski, and building and hauling a giant boat over a mountain. If you liked Hearts of Darkness or Living in Oblivion, crack this one open.
review 2: After seeing the film and the documentary on the making of the film, I finally got my hands on this book. Herzog kept a journal during the making of the film, and this is the result. It is a rare opportunity to get into the mind of a great artist and man. It is intelligent, poetic, funny, and heartbreaking at times. His observations on his surroundings and about life resonated with me. His dedication and resilience is inspiring. This will be on my list of top 10 favorite books. less
