review 1: Well written. It felt like a first time novel though where the writer would hit his stride and pull you in and then slowly ebb and flow bringing you close to the characters and then allowing you (albeit, not intentionally) to flow away from the story and recognize the faults of the characters you're supposed to be cheering for. It was a roller coaster of a ride for most of the story but that's exactly what made it so exciting. I can't wait to find out how this series plays out. Highly recommended for people who like the flux that some authors can produce. Chu nails it. You get sucked in, then are allowed to create your own thoughts about the circumstances in the story but he pulls you back in, keeping you with the protagonist through to the end.
review 2: I was
... more disappointed given all the good reviews of this book. I found the premise of the aliens on earth here for 65 million years, directing human development, and then fighting amongst themselves only for the last 500 years a bit too much. The characters were cartoonish. The book was written from the perspective of a video game where a nerd is controlled by an alien and all the women are his fantasy conquests. On the other hand the book was interesting once you accepted all of these outlandish premises. Perhaps the reason was that nothing seemed very dangerous. Even though the protagonist was constantly getting into trouble, you knew, just as in the comics, that nothing bad would ever happen, so reading this book kept your stress level down. A very "relaxing" war story.I had no trouble finishing this book, but have no interest in seeing what happens in the second and third books in this saga. less

Fun read. Good characters. Nice merge of James Bond-like action mixed with misfit buddy-film vibe.

Funny, intelligent, diverse science fiction. Even better, it takes place in Chicago. Loved it.

This was an interesting and entertaining book. There is definitely room for a sequel.
