review 1: 3.5. A book easily read in one day, Long Drive Home explores in detail the consequences that follow a split second decision, especially the impact this decision has on those close to the narrator and main character. I was a little disappointed in the ending as it just....ended. There was no resolving anything other than the letter to his daughter assuaging Glen's guilt as he tried to explain what happened and the reasons behind what he did. Although it added to the story, I thought it was a little unrealistic that Rizzo (the cop investigating) seemed so dogged in his pursuit to uncover "the truth" even in light of facts which shed new light on the situation. As an aside, I was somewhat amused by the spot on description in the beginning of the book of how aggressive NJ driv... moreers are. Having learned to drive in NJ and visiting there often, this is a common topic of conversation in our family!
review 2: Glen is the ego-centric narrator and short-fused road rager who, through a series of unfortunate events, ultimately causes the fatal accident of a hot-head teenage driver. It made for a lively book club discussion - what would YOU do if you found yourself in this plausible scenario? Would men and women react differently? How far would you go to protect yourself and your family? How long can you evade justice before the stress/anxiety/guilt ruins your life? less
