review 2: Can't believe how disappointed I was with this book. The reviews were glowing, and the price didn't go down the entire time (a couple of years) that I had it on my wish list. I was excited to get it finally. It began in a super promising way, and I was intrigued by the mystery of the clowns and their creepiness. Then...the entire book fell into a kind of silly carnival back stage horror aspiration that never evolved into anything worthwhile. At first the Jamie dichotomy was interesting, but what kind of villain bursts into sobbing tears at every sign of upheaval, while his alter ego the protagonist was such a milch toast he just let everyone walk all over him. It made him unbelievable. None of the characterizations were worth anything; I didn't care about a single actor on this stage. The most feared and terrible big shot was a cartoon; the one woman character was meh, and the resolution seemed singularly unresolved. Must have been planning on a sequel. I did think a couple of the clowns had some disturbing interest, but the foreshadowing I thought was leading up to something with them fizzled entirely. I mainly just felt sorry for everyone in this hot mess. Elliot seems to think that throwing blood and feces, obscenities and malformed bodies around makes a horror novel. Everything was just words: Jamie said this, Goshy did that, the tent fell, the cart tipped over. Never once did I believe; never once did I laugh, or feel uneasy, fearful, or glad to be reading this book. I'm aware a lot of people loved this 5 stars worth, but I can't see it. I wonder if he's improved since...don't know, and I probably won't read any of his future endeavors. less
