review 1: I have a fear of clown cultivated by an early exposure to the book IT and the film 'Killer Klowns from Out of Space' (this book was a gift) so that taints my star rating a little. In many ways I felt it was influenced really strongly by King, not only in tone, but in the sense that many of his books start so strongly and scarily that it is difficult to have an ending that can match up. Worth a read, especially for the early chapters.
review 2: This is the most psychotic, nightmarish, funny, and crazy book I've ever read. I can't think of anything that this would remotely compare to. I loved it. The characters were great and I found myself liking all of the clowns (Rufshod being my favorite) and most of the supporting cast. Katherine Dunn says in the introductio... moren, "The classic definition of slapstick runs along the line of, "Funny is someone else ramming his face repeatedly into a brick wall" - this truly demented humor ran the course of the clowns antics. They're crazed, nonsensical killers out only for fun and for themselves. If ICP fans could read, they'd be all over this. less
