review 1: A YA m/m book. I did like it and the story it told; parts of it seemed so realistic, though some of it was a bit over the top. The first half is full of unrequited pining, which is typical for high school students, especially closeted gay kids. However, there was a lot of exposition, and some more dialogue could have broken it up. The second half turned very melodramatic. I did like that it didn't have a perfect ending, though it did have a hopeful note. A decent, quick read.
review 2: I had high hopes for this book. If you are following the m/m writer community you have heard the name of the author on fb before, he is friends with some of the best-known names there. So I was curious. And slightly dissapointed. I can't understand the good reviews. Parts of
... more the book read like a blurb, jumping so fast in action that I had a feeling of fast forwarding. Then the reactions of the people....like..everything worked so smooth. Example: the camp (do they really let other boys "counsel" abused kids?). Just a few days, one painting and Andy of course opens up to "Wonderbenny and Wondertaylor" (sorry, I couldn't resist). The book would have been a collection of "happy, go lucky moments" if the author hadn't added the "lying bitch" and the "psycopath". Okay, everything was so obvious, it hurt. And no, no, no, but people just don't talk this way. Or at least the ones I know. And falling in love with someone you never talked more than a few words? Seriously, it cartered all clichées, combinded with a simpleness in writing and overused dialogues. So, sorry, it really did nothing for me. less
