review 1: This is one of the best and most interesting books I've read. Will Storr takes you on a crazy investigative journey through the human mind and leaves you reeling with confusion over what is real and what is fabricated by our brains not only in how we experience events in real time, but the way that our memories can deceive us. The parts about confabulation and cognitive dissonance were especially interesting to me. At the end of it you come away with a better understanding of the way the brain functions based on how it's built emotional, social and physical models over time, but you also question your own interpretation of past experiences. It definitely leaves you with a lot to chew on.
review 2: Hilarious, marvelous,eye opening , completely unapologetic stud... morey of the non believers of science.From Homeopaths to Baba Ramdev to Vipasana to Past Life Regression Therapy,Storr has done it all.And it is this very personal experience that makes the book highly readable.Storr also does a nice bit on understanding quite simplistically(in his own words) why the brain thinks the way it does and how we project those images into the world around us.The personal bit of the book also points to a kind of reconciliation of the rational and the irrational thought process that makes life so interesting and Storr seems to make peace with the fact that in accepting this diversity is our best chance of survival as a race. less
