review 1: I've always been a fan of william s. burroughs, kerouac, and ginsberg...had no idea any of them were friends. After seeing kill your darlings, i had to go back and read everything they had ever written, so i started with this. i enjoyed reading about their tales and adventures in pubs at 2 in the morning, roaming around new york in '44. Kerouac's style seems more solidified than burroughs, even if kerouac is much younger than him here. I have to agree with most other reviewers of this 'novella' and say the best part of this was the ingenious, crazy title. It kinda fits into the story. perhaps a disturbing analogy of kammerer's fate? or an overall metaphor to the lives of these young kids trying to find themselves, esp. to kerouac and burroughs- how they and their circle ex... moreperienced the aftermath of the murder.. feeling like hippos being boiled in their own tanks. Or i guess it just sounded cool. i definitely want to read young ginsberg's journals after this (i'm sure he would have had a pivotal role in the lucien-kammerer relationship), even more so because they left him out altogether in this :(
review 2: Read this book in one sitting the day after watching the independent film "Kill Your Darlings". The film was excellent and brought up a desire to hear more of the true story and read more by The Beat writers I have neglected since early art school (late 1990's) The odd thing about this book that the film was based on is the total absence of Allen Ginsberg who oddly is the main character in the movie "Kill Your Darlings". The book is written by Burroughs and Kerouac alternating as the author and Ginsberg never even enters into the story at all. less
