review 1: This review is for the Kindle edition ebook.A delightful coming of age story, which includes learning to trust the right people.15-year-old Rae is invited to attend a school in England on a full scholarship. She was born in England, but has been in the United States for 10 years. As an orphan being raised by and aunt and uUncle, Rae is surprised to learn that everyone at the new school seems to know about her and her family. Now she will need to learn about her family, before the new powers within her take root on her sixteenth birthday.Life is difficult for those who appear to stick out from the crowd. Rae is the perfect example of how difficult it can be to learn to trust the good people, and avoid those who intend to do harm. Sometimes, that decision is not easy to make... more. I like the way the author leads the reader through the difficulties of being a teenager in a new setting. Life is difficult enough for teens, but to have to learn about your own family while learning to navigate life would be very hard. W.J. May writes to entertain the reader. Her book not only entertains but strives to point out how difficult life can be for the teenager when everyone seems to be against them. It gives readers that Rae of Hope that life really will get better.I would recommend this book to teenagers, young adults, and even older adults that enjoy coming of age stories. If you enjoy fantasy, I urge you to add this to your reading list. I will be reading the next book of this series.
review 2: I love the story. However, I cannot help but find some shocking similarities with well known series I have read before. Is it just me or is this plot too similar to Harry? She finds out about this sepical school for gifted. Her parents died when she was a child, and she somehow survived the fire that killed both of them. Finds out her mum sacrificed herself to protect her. At school everyone know who she is. The Headmaster seems awfully familiar to another wise headmaster of an old school for gifted children. Then there is the Dean that seems to hate her, who reminds you of a misunderstood potion master. It cannot be just me who noticed the alarming similarities. Now, I am not saying I did not enjoyed reading this book, because I did. However, I did found some parts very annoying. For a girl that is so smart, it took her forever to figure out what her power is. It was almost impossible to watch her going in circles. Then there is how predictable the characters are. The forshawdoing just make it all so much easier to guess who was the good guy and who was the wolf wearing sheep's clothes. I almost laughed when I was right. But I did enjoyed reading the story. less
