review 1: Beautiful stories from the one of the best short story writers of our times with stories about lonely people and about loneliness. And no, I didn't find it depressing.Like in India, China seems to be a place where there is a constant struggle between the individual and being part of the group, be it the family or social groups (as in India) or the communist groups and work groups in China and these stories of Individual who are alone in a crowd goes deep into the hearts of the people and their lives and also the society we live in. The first story, also the longest, is my favourite and must admit that Yiyun Li transports you to a world that could be compared to Orhan Pamuk's Huzun minus the anguish. You will love the characters, the Chinese sayings, proverbs and habits tha... moret surprise us.
review 2: Kultapoika, smaragdityttö on novellikokoelma, joka koostuu kahdeksasta novellista. Novellit kertovat kiinalaisista, joiden elämä on muuttunut tai muuttumassa ja joista osa haluaisi pitää kiinni vanhoista tavoista. Kokoelma tosin kaipaisi vaihtelevuutta, sillä vaikka tarinat ovat kiinnostavia, ne ovat liian samankaltaisia keskenään ja lukemisesta tulee pian puuduttavaa, vaikka novelleja lukisi kerraallaan vain yhden. Muutamat yksittäiset tarinat jäävät toki mieleen, vaikka suurin osa novelleista hukkuu massaan. Kokonaisuutena siis hieman yksitoikkoinen novellikokoelmateos, jolle annan 3 tähteä. less
