review 1: Viva Frida is written by Yuyi Morales, a Latino author/illustrator. The book is about a world famous artist named Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was and still is well-known around the work for her unusual art styles. This book tells the story about her life. She filled her life with love, laughter, and also some tragedy which is what influenced most of her art. She painted many pictures on canvases based off of the many events that occurred throughout her life. Yuyi Morales does a great job expressing the fascinating work of Frida Kahlo. I would use this book for older students in grades 2nd-4th. A teacher using this book, would have to start with explaining who Frida Kahlo is because I’m sure many of them would not have ever heard of her before. This book could be use... mored as part of a text set about Frida Kahlo of people from a diverse Hispanic/Latino background. Another thing about this book that could be difficult would the lack of text and works on the pages. This book would definitely have to be used as a read aloud book with the teacher having prior knowledge about Frida Kahlo. Some activities that would go along with this book would be reading other books about Frida and having the students paint/draw a picture of either themselves or of something they enjoy doing.
review 2: Expressive illustrations using an altered Barbie for Frida, this bilingual book does a wonderful job of capturing in very few words the motivation behind artistic expression. What is art and what does it do for the artist are big subjects and this book does a really nice job of introducing young children to these concepts. It also illuminates Frida's life and the symbols that frequent her work. The biography of the artist at the end is much appreciated and should spur young readers onto further investigation of the artist and her work. less

I'll be really surprised if this doesn't get some kind of Caldecott recognition.

Could garner a Pure Bel pere, or perhaps Caldecott honor. Lovely!
