review 1: 2/5First time I've a) never finished a Maxfield novel and b) given one of her works less than 3/5. Why is that?Characterisation: flat. Sadly to say I can't find any other way of putting it. I found myself only reading and pressing on in order to hear and catch more glimpses of the back-up cast of uber-kawaii (that is 'cute' to non-otaku nuts) ghost lovers... the main protagonists could simply retire. I didn't invest into them at all. The primary casting of protagonists left me totally apathetic to their plight. Which, in the context of a romance novel is a significant problem.Plot: dull. The novel departs, mistakenly, from Maxfield tried and successfully tested set plot pattern. She typically always offers up a pattern with: 'opening twist' followed by the 'double twist' e... morending; usually with minor events tying it all up. But with this novel she doesn't follow that and the plot is left feeling somewhat dull in the opening third.Originality: nothing much springs to mind. She usually has strong, brilliant narratives which touch on homophobia, transphobia and the wrongness of discrimination (even from a Christian viewpoint)... but this novel seems lacking in most of these sub-narratives.All in all not a bad book, not even poor; it does have its moments. But these become fewer and fewer the longer you force yourself to press on. Her awesome handle on the English language, and brilliant set of backing characters aren't enough to compensate for the weaknesses.I had hesitated prior to reading this one, and I wish I'd heeded my first warning and left well enough alone.
review 2: 3.5Serge and Julian, secondary characters in this story, were such a delight to read about...their love, their verve, sweet mannerisms, and the heartbreaking way their lives ended. I never felt this good about ghosts before :) Wanted more of them. The main story didn't keep me as enraptured, which I primarily blame on Garret (ick!).Could a girl hope that ZAM would write a story about Serge and Julian someday? less
