review 1: An affecting novel about the Lebanese Civil War, from the point of view of two children waiting for their parents to return home during a severe bombardment. The kids are surrounded by people from their building who quietly care for them during this particularly tense episode. Despite the dire circumstances, the tone is gentle and hopeful, filled with stories that are sad, happy, and sometimes even funny -- a testament to the humanity of the people involved, and making the book easy to read even when the characters seem stuck in an intolerable situation. The art is integral to the story, moving it along as much as the words, each careful detail adding to the narrative. Very well done!

The images are familiar to me--a close-knit family with curly black hair, pictures of past generations on walls and love of family and neighbors brought together by food and culture. The complexities of life in a city at war are seen though a child's eyes--not completely understood and alluded to, but so effective. less
