review 1: I don’t mind telling you that I picked up A Game for Swallows because I was so taken by the cover. I definitely judge graphic novels by their covers because an enormous part of the reading experience for a graphic novel is the design of the book. How the cover is designed tells me a lot about how I might enjoy the rest, which in the case of this book is a lot. It is a good balance of well-told, powerful story and visually striking art. During the civil war in Beirut, two children are separated from their parents who have gone across the border to the other side of the city to visit their grandmother. The evening the children spend in the care of the idiosyncratic neighbors from the rest of their apartment building makes for one of those good people in difficult circumsta... morences stories that I enjoy. But what I really loved about this book was the art. The bold, graphic black and white images drew me in, especially when they repeated across a page or part of one. Looping spirals in someone’s hair, oil barrels that lined the streets, even the cars in the background on the cover form a rhythm against which the intricate details of the drawings and the story could unfold. It is not a long book but full and very satisfying.
review 2: This story was very interesting from my point of view because the pictures and the way the author described the book made me continue on reading it. It tells the story of a family in Lebanon who lived during the war and how they would get things they need, how they calmed the children... The book was a bit short and it summarised the life of each character in four sentences. I would recommend this book to people who lived through that war and people who are interested in finding out how Lebanese people lived through that year. less
