review 1: This book is compared to Persepolis a lot, and the artwork is similar, as is the focus on a young narrator in a wartorn environment, but I really felt the scope of the story was too limited. A group of people huddle together one night in Beirut. We get glimpses of their past, and we are supposed to worry about the children's parents missing, but the characters are static, and they collectively create an immobile tapestry more than they create a moving story.
review 2: In this graphic novel, author Zeina Abirached, shares her memoirs of what it was like to grow up in the midst of the war in Beirut in the 80's. At the beginning of the story we discover that her parents have gone out to visit her grandparents, but have not made it home. A collection of unique neigh
... morebors come to stay with her & her brother while they wait for her parents to make it back safely. At times the story causes confusion for the reader. First of all, the book starts with a forward from a Trina Robbins and it is not clear how she is relevant to this story, and her forward is a bit about her perspective while also trying to give information about Zeina the background on the story. Not enough background is given and since a reader may not know about this war the writing can be confusing at times. Also, the text has flashbacks and it can take the reader some time to readjust to pick up on this. The pictures are clearly drawn in black and white and can add to the story at some points, while at other times it can leave the reader wanting more description. Appropriate for grades 8+, this book can be used in conjunction with other books to help develop a deeper understanding of this particular war, but also the general idea of how much turmoil war causes for families and cultures. less
