review 1: The way these memories are weaved make them all the more poignant. For as much as I thought I couldn't relate to a kid's experience of growing up in Beirut in the 80s, I learned that we both remember Flo Jo's nails and the sounds from cassette tapes. I loved that I could go onto YouTube and listen to Ms. Abirached's favorite musician. While listening, I realized that she and I had such different experiences growing up but more than I thought, we shared typical teen memories.

Abirached writes of the normal teenage worries about hair and appearance but this normalcy is set against the backdrop of war torn Lebanon. Abirached continues her tale into adul... morethood and her move to Paris, but writes of the challenges still facing her native land.This was a really interesting book that was presented in a very fresh way. The drawings and storyline caused me to see Lebanon and its conflicts in an entirely new way. Great book with a slightly difficult to understand ending. less
