review 1: This YA paranormal novel is a fantastic read. I received a free digital copy through Amazon and was very pleased with the author's story telling abilities and writing skills. McKenna has never been part of the "in" crowd. She's always been a bit heavy and insecure. When she was very young McKenna lived through a house fire that claimed the life of her twin sister. In the years following the fire McKenna wondered if somehow the fire had claimed the wrong twin. Following a summer of impressive weight loss McKenna is determined to shed her "fat girl" image and it's accompanying mind set. McKenna thinks her junior year of high school is going to be the best ever when she’s welcomed into the elite group of popular girls at Weeping Willow High School led by blond and gorgeous ... moreOlivia. On the night of Olivia’s Sweet Sixteen sleepover birthday party. The girls get bored and Violet, the shy, mysterious new girl in town, suggests that they play a game called 'Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.' During the game Violet makes up elaborate stories about the ways in which Olivia, Candace, and Mischa will die. The deaths predicted by Violet to detailed and terribly gruesome. Each of the girls feel a bit unsettled after the game but try to shake the feeling, it's just a game after all. It doesn’t seem like a harmless game a week later when Olivia dies unexpectedly in a violent car crash, exactly as Violet had predicted. As Violet rises to popularity and seemingly steps into the life Olivia left unfinished, McKenna and her next door neighbor Trey know they have a limited amount of time to bring an end to Violet’s game before more lives are lost. This book left me feeling a bit unsettled as well. Parts of the book kind of freaked me out! But it was scary in a good way. I was a little afraid to turn my lights off at night, but that's OK, I didn't want to stop reading anyway. My biggest gripe about this story is that it left off feeling unfinished. I am hoping for another novel in which the story continues.
review 2: The set up was pretty interesting enough to keep me reading the book. Also the creepiness between McKenna and her twin Jenni, especially the night of the fire interested me more than most of the rest of the book did. I definitely wish that had been explored more in the first book and perhaps it will in the second. After the night at Olivia's house when the girls played the scary game etc. the mystery got a lot less mysterious and dragged along throughout the whole book. That being said the climax is a fast-paced adventure joyride and made the book pretty much worth reading. less
