review 1: I am a big Zoe Archer fan and loved the Blades of the Rose series, but I was disappointed with the first book of the Ether Chronicles. I never felt a connection with the two main characters and found myself not really caring what happened to them. I think the biggest difference is the villains in the Blades' series were personalized and you grew to hate them and root for the good guys. In this book though, the villains were pretty much nameless drones and there just wasn't enough adventure or romance for me. I purchased books 1 and 2 together so I will read the second one, but I don't have high expectations.
review 2: Captain Christopher (Kit) Redmond and Naval Intelligence spy Louisa Shaw were a great couple. I had a few qualms about the length of the book in ... morethat I wasn't sure how invested I would be in a couple who falls in love in a little more than 200 pages. But I was pleasantly surprised. Archer skillfully created a rich back story where Kit and Lulu had fallen madly in love years ago, and she left him over commitment issues. Three years later and their connection is just as intense. When Kit heroically saves the brave spy from sure death, I was hooked. The two were a wonderful match both in terms of bravery, loyalty, and lust. I will definitely read more of this series. less
