review 1: As a follow up to "Where Is God When it Hurts?", Yancey again revisits the question of "why?" This was a very concise read (finished in probably 2.5 hours or so) and it speedily went through three recent tragedies to illustrate more reflection on the why question. I always find Yancey to be readable, full of truth, and in line with how I think about God. This read was no different. While not a game changer like some of his other books, it was a great reminder of God's love for this world, even despite all the suffering. The topic of suffering is where the rubber meets the road for Christians and we need to be able to bring hope to those in need. This book is a great place to start.
review 2: Philip Yancey writes of his experiences when asked to talk to people i
... moren war zones, and to parents who have lost children in tragic school shooting incidents around the US. He asks some difficult questions, attempting to reach out to people going through appalling circumstances, without sounding trite.Yancey’s writing is always good; he has a talent for explaining complex concepts to lay people without ever being condescending. He acknowledges that each individual is different, that nobody can go through anybody else’s pain, and that we all deal with tragedies in different ways. I’m glad I read this; it was a good reminder that life isn’t easy, but that God is still with us, wanting to hold us close, to share in our pain. And yet, it doesn’t really say a lot more than was explored in his classic ‘Where is God when it hurts?’. less
