review 1: I picked this up because the premise sounded too good to pass up -- a retired supervillain ends up fighting to outsmart an even bigger threat to the universe than he is. And Martinez did not disappoint!The protagonist's voice is stellar, entertaining, and consistent with such sociopathic thought processes as one would expect from a supervillain (who's honestly been rather bored since his last planetary conquest).A well-developed "world", with various sentient races from all the planets in our own galaxy, each with its own culture, defining characteristics, etc.And the story itself! Such a romp through ridiculousness--but then, how else do supervillains work?Highly recommended! I will definitely be seeking out more of Martinez's work!
review 2: Fun and ridiculou... mores sci-fi, with clear influences of Doctor Who and Princess Bride throughout. And a little Hitchhiker's Guide thrown in. Not the super-villain's redemption story that I initially expected, but more of a demonstration of the thought process of someone who thinks very differently, calculating constantly, aware of his own flaws - the two biggest being arrogance and insatiable curiosity - yet still acting upon them.
